This one-off 12 fret cutaway version of the Etowah parlour guitar was made by Patrick for renowned guitarist, and Patrick James Eggle endorsee, Andy Philip. Made in 2007 this guitar was Andy’s main guitar, using it for a 12-year stint on West End show Wicked and on the X Factor.
This extremely high spec guitar was made in Patrick’s Oswestry workshop. It features a Sitka Spruce top with Indian Rosewood back and sides. The comfortable Mahogany neck has an Ebony fingerboard and beautiful Waverley engraved tuners with Ivory buttons – note that there are no fret markers on the fretboard, only markers are on the neck binding. The bridge is also Ebony, with the shell dots on the ivory bridge pins tying in with the simple but classy shell inlay on rosette. It may only be parlour size but the volume and tone (especially bottom and middle) sounds like a guitar twice its size. Andy added a (removable) LR Baggs M1 Active pickup to the guitar, which is included. The bottom strap end pin input is connected through internal wiring which plugs into the pickup when required. This was preferred to a permanent pickup solution as the M1 pickup can be easily removed or added depending on the requirements, allowing the pure acoustic sound of this guitar to shine through.
The guitar is in great condition, although it does have a few minor marks and dings as you would expect from a guitar so well gigged. A few years ago the guitar did get a small bash in the bottom edge – this was expertly repaired by Celine Camerlynck at Luthier’s Corner – first class work and this has not affected the sound of the guitar in any way – see last 2 pictures although difficult to show as the finish is smooth to the touch. This rare British made guitar comes complete with its original Hiscox hard shell case.
