The earliest Fender Japan instruments can be divided into two basic categories; Squier-branded guitars that were built for export, primarily to the UK and US, and guitars made under the Fender brand that were intended for the Japanese domestic market.
The first Fender Japan instruments produced were closely based on Fender instruments of the late 1950s and early 1960s and are commonly known as the "JV" series, due to their serial numbers beginning with the letters JV. These JV Strats (and Teles) were known for their particularly high quality, often incorporating American-made pickups and offering period-correct details.
This 1983 Squier JV Stratocaster is from the export ST-57 JV serial number models – based on the ’57 Stratocaster with its 2 colour burst finish. The ST-57 has US Fender pickups and Japanese electrics (5-way selector switch). The saddles have “FENDER FENDER” embossed with both logos running the same direction, the neck pocket has correct “C” and “EX” stamps, with the pencil written date on the heal of the neck confirming 1983 production.
The guitar is all original and we understand there were only 2 owners prior to it coming into the shop. Considering it is over 40 years old the guitar is in great condition – yes there are a couple of small dings (top of bass horn and top of the heal) and some light marks and scratches (see last 6 pictures) but the guitar has been maintained in great condition. Frets and maple fretboard are in great condition, and now it has been freshly set up with new set of 10s the guitar plays great and sounds fantastic – no wonder these guitars are so sought after just now. The guitar comes complete with modern croc skin style hard case.
