The 500/1, which had been produced by Hofner for only European consumption since 1956, was finally introduced into the UK by Selmer in 1963 as the Violin Bass - Used, then and now, by a gentleman called Sir Paul McCartney.
This 1964 Hofner 500/1 Bass is all original with the exception of the jack input and the added heal mounted strap button. Pot codes are for 1964 and the serial number also comes back to ‘64. The bass is in super condition considering its 60 years of age with really nice vintage patina as the lacquer is just starting to craze. There is a nice thumb wear mark next to the neck pickup and there are some other tiny marks on the body (see last 6 pictures) but the bass is in excellent overall condition. The neck has been rest so it is good to go for another 60 years – setup with a brand new set of La Bella Stainless Steel Flat Wound strings the bass plays and sounds great – comes complete with brand new Hofner fitted hard case.
