Gretsch introduced the 6070 bass guitar in 1962. The 6070 bass model is a standard long scale bass and a hollow double-cutaway body based on the elegant and popular Country Gentleman guitar (it was often referred to as the “Country Gentleman Bass”).
This 1963 Gretsch 6070 is a high-quality bass, with a single Filter’Tron bass pickup placed near the bridge, 2” body depth, upper-bout three-position tone switch, lower-bout mute switch, painted “f holes”, dual finger rests, four-string Space Control bridge and “G” cut-out tailpiece, gold hardware, padded back pad and a massive maple neck with a rather large headstock with two tuners per side. It also has a Cello spike - an extendable endpin that allowed the instrument to be played like an upright bass. This bass has an interesting history, being bought by Nick Lowe by a Pawn shop in Kentucky in 1977 – then famously used in the cover shots for his “Jesus of Cool” album. We have an email from Nick confirming its provenance, having been given to his Scottish Tour Manager Brian Carson in the 1990s.
The bass has been fully refurbished back to full playability. The bass is all original with the exception of the aged thumb rest and tug bars and the new foam on the string mute. It is in great condition, especially considering its age, with only light marks to the body and a small mark to the front of the headstock to show for its 61+ years. The back pad has lost most of its padding but all the studs are present and working as they should, and the gold hardware has tarnished with age.
